Programme Director/ Facilitator Biography
Prof Kathija Yassim – University of Johannesburg
Prof. Kathija Yassim is the facilitator of the Education Conversations as she is invested in the education space, and her work is focused on related areas.
Prof. Yassim teaches postgraduate education leadership programmes and coordinates the online Masters in Education Leadership and Management Programme. Her research interests include leading Education for 21st-century skills development and cultivating future fit and innovative leadership in South African schools. She leads the school culture stream projects for the Sandbox in partnership with the NECT.

Dr Moses Simelane – Department of Basic Education

Dr. Moses Simelane began his career as a teacher in three different schools in which he progressed from a level one teacher to a principal. He then served as Deputy Chief Education Specialist in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by roles in research, monitoring, and evaluation at various organisations. Within the Department of Education, he held positions such as Chief Education Specialist, Director of Inclusive Education, and Chief Director of Curriculum Implementation and Monitoring, a role he presently occupies. Since January 2021, he has intermittently served as Deputy Director-General of Curriculum Policy Support and Monitoring in the Department of Basic Education.
Dr Cynthia Malinga – Sasol Foundation

Cynthia is an education professional dedicated to improving lives through education. With a background in science education, program management, educator development, research, and instructional leadership, she currently serves as the Technical-Vocational Education Development Portfolio Manager at the Sasol Foundation. In this role, Cynthia spearheads vocational skills development initiatives in schools and TVET Colleges.
Ms. Cheryl Weston – Department of Basic Education

Ms Cheryl Weston currently serves as the Director for Learning Recovery and Curriculum Strengthening in the Department of Basic Education). In her recent role, she has taken the lead at the Department to enhance the curriculum, ensuring learners are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for a dynamic world and a seamless transition from school to work and beyond. Cheryl is actively involved in curriculum organisations regionally and internationally, including the African Curriculum Association (ACA). Moreover, she holds the position of Deputy Chair of the African Union (AU) CESA Curriculum Cluster, championing continental efforts for curriculum harmonisation on behalf of the African Union.

Ms. Mphatsoe, Education Head at Kagiso Trust, possesses a BED Hons degree in Education, training, and development from the University of Johannesburg. With 18 years of teaching experience, she has held managerial roles including head of department and Deputy Principal. Additionally, she serves as a facilitator, leading team-building workshops and coordinating interventions with district management. Her areas of expertise include team building, strategic development, budget management, project management, and problem-solving.
