South Africa stands at a critical juncture, facing entrenched socio-political and economic challenges that threaten the very essence of its democracy. The aspirations of equality and prosperity envisioned in the post-apartheid era remain unfulfilled for many, as injustice and inequality persist across all levels of society. In response to this crisis, civil society has re-emerged as a vital force for change, advocating for justice, accountability, and social transformation.
The conference will outline the final steps towards the establishment of the Civil Society Unmute Coalition-SA, aiming to:
- Clearly define the current socio-political and economic challenges facing South Africa,
- Emphasise the ethical and strategic duty of civil society to intervene, redirect, and reaffirm the constitutional imperatives of South Africa,
- Reactivate organised civil society and citizen activism – a call to action in defence of our constitutional democracy, advancing demands for social justice.
The strategic imperative is to reconvene the Civil Society Unmute Coalition Conference to adopt decisions and resolutions towards formally establishing and launching the Civil Society Unmute Coalition as a progressive movement, grounded at local, district, provincial, and national levels. This movement must be capable of organising and enhancing civil society’s role in our democracy, achieving economic and social justice for all – leaving no one behind.
The second Unmute conference seeks to consolidate the multiple consultations that our initiative has undertaken within the sector and across provinces, aimed at enhancing active citizens’ coordinated capabilities to address our national developmental challenges and priorities.
