The Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in African School Leadership Development.
Kagiso Trust held a virtual Leadership Conference 2024 in partnership with the University of Johannesburg. The conference delved into the dynamic relationship between human and artificial intelligence in shaping future-fit leaders for the African context. As AI technologies evolve, they offer powerful tools to enhance leadership training through personalised learning and real-time analytics. The conference explored how AI can be integrated into leadership development to foster self-awareness, adaptability, and a growth mindset, whilst addressing the ethical considerations and potential risks. This includes navigating the complexities of leadership in a rapidly changing world and discovering how the fusion of human and machine intelligence can empower the next generation of leaders.

Facilitator & Speaker Bio’s
Prof. Kathija Yassim
Prof. Kathija Yassim is the facilitator of the Leadership Conference as she is invested in the education space, and her work is focused on related areas.
Prof. Yassim teaches postgraduate education leadership programmes and coordinates the online Masters in Education Leadership and Management Programme. Her research interests include leading Education for 21st-century skills development and cultivating future fit and innovative leadership in South African schools. She leads the school culture stream projects for the Sandbox in partnership with the NECT.
Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala
Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala is now the Rector of the United Nations University. He holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge. His research interests include AI applications in various fields, and he has published over 20 books and 300 papers. Marwala has received numerous awards, including the Order of Mapungubwe and the President’s Award from the National Research Foundation.
Dr Babu Paul

Professor Babu Sena Paul is an Associate Professor and Director at the Institute for Intelligent Systems, University of Johannesburg. He holds degrees in Radiophysics and Electronics and a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. Professor Paul has published over 60 research papers and supervised many postgraduate students. He is a member of the IEEE and IETE.
Prof Tankiso Moloi
Professor Tankiso Moloi is a Professor and Academic Director at the Johannesburg Business School, University of Johannesburg. He has held various academic and leadership positions, including Director of Enterprise Risk Management at the University of South Africa. He is a published author with a focus on accounting, risk management, and AI, and has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to education and research.
Prof Vesa Nissinen
Prof Vesa Nissinen is the founder and president of Deep Lead Inc which develops leaders through transformational leadership. Nissinen has extensive experience in leadership development across the military, business, and public sectors. He has served as a CEO, commander, manager, instructor, coach, and researcher. Professor Nissinen advocates for transformational leadership as a key approach to achieving culture transformation, employee engagement, and inclusion within organisations.

Dr Sadi Seyama is a Senior Lecturer in Education Leadership and Management at the University of Johannesburg. She focuses on decolonial perspectives in education, social justice, and sustainable futures. Dr Seyama has been recognised for her contributions to community engagement and diversity, including the UJ Community Engagement Award and the Emerald EDI Best Paper Award.
Mr Thabang Nkuna

Mr Thabang Nkuna is a seasoned educator specialising in Computer Applications Technology and Information Technology. He teaches at Mafikeng High School and manages the school’s website, alongside serving as a CAT Chief Marker for the Northwest Education Department. Nkuna is dedicated to integrating technology into education and has been recognised for his excellence in technology-enhanced teaching. He holds a BEd Honours in Education Leadership and Management from Northwest University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Johannesburg.
