Programme Director/ Facilitator Biography

Prof Kathija Yassim – University of Johannesburg

Prof. Kathija Yassim is the facilitator of the Education Conversations as she is invested in the education space, and her work is focused on related areas.

Prof. Yassim teaches postgraduate education leadership programmes and coordinates the online Masters in Education Leadership and Management Programme. Her research interests include leading Education for 21st-century skills development and cultivating future fit and innovative leadership in South African schools. She leads the school culture stream projects for the Sandbox in partnership with the NECT.

Peter Tabichi

Peter Tabichi is a Kenyan science teacher and Franciscan Brother who won the Global Teacher Prize in 2019, recognised for his dedication and achievements in teaching under-resourced schools in Kenya. Tabichi’s innovative teaching methods and advocacy for science have significantly increased student attendance, engagement, and success rates, particularly in national and international science competitions. He emphasises a student-centred approach and the use of technology and practical experiments to enhance learning, even in challenging environments. Tabichi’s work extends beyond the classroom, involving community initiatives and mentorship, making him a powerful advocate for education as a tool for change.

 

Phenyo Koka

Proposed Topic: Empowering Rural Education through Technology and Community Involvement

Phenyo Koka is a dedicated teacher based in Limpopo, South Africa, known for her innovative approaches to education, particularly in leveraging technology to enhance learning in rural schools. She actively promotes professional development and capacity building among her peers, mentoring other educators to adopt new methodologies and improve their teaching skills. Koka’s work extends beyond the classroom, as she involves the community in educational processes to create a supportive and holistic environment for students. Her advocacy for equitable education has led to significant improvements in her school’s engagement and performance, particularly in empowering students with practical skills and critical thinking. Phenyo’s commitment to her students and community makes her a key voice in discussions about the future of education in under-resourced areas.
