The Declining Uptake of Mathematics in South African
Mathematics continues to play a critical role in shaping opportunities for learners and preparing young people for careers in science, technology, engineering and other mathematics-intensive fields. However, South Africa continues to face significant challenges in Mathematics education, including concerns around the declining number of learners choosing Mathematics as a subject at school. Discussions among education stakeholders suggest that school performance pressures may unintentionally influence subject choices and the availability of Mathematics in schools.
Through this Education Conversations session, Kagiso Trust in partnership with the University of Johannesburg seeks to create a platform for stakeholders across the education sector to engage on the realities behind declining Mathematics participation, explore systemic challenges, and identify practical solutions to strengthen Mathematics education in South Africa.

Panel 1: Understanding the Reality on the Ground
Panel facilitator:
Dr Viren Ramdhany hails from KwaZulu-Natal, where he spent many years teaching English Home Language and Mathematics at high school level. He completed his PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), with a focus on teacher knowledge and practice—an area that continues to inform his research and teaching.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr Ramdhany completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) before joining the University of Johannesburg (UJ). His scholarly interests lie in understanding how mathematics teachers think about and enact their practice across varied educational contexts.
He is particularly concerned with the quality and accessibility of mathematics education. In line with Schoenfeld’s idea of “teaching for robust understanding,” he believes that while not all teachers need to be social justice advocates, ensuring equitable and meaningful access to mathematics learning must remain a core priority in education.
For Dr Ramdhany, true success lies in his students recognising this imperative. If they come to value the importance of equitable, thoughtful mathematics education, then he considers his work well done.
