Kagiso Trust and FirstRand Empowerment Foundation Partner to Transform Communal Livestock Farming

A meaningful stride toward inclusive economic development and rural revitalisation was marked by the formal strategic partnership established between Kagiso Trust and the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation (FREF). This strategic collaboration is a shared commitment to invest in sustainable community capabilities, dismantle persistent inequality and unlock economic value where it matters most.

A Shared Vision for Sustainable Impact

For over forty years Kagiso Trust has walked alongside South African communities, transitioning from historic relief efforts to scalable, self-sustaining socio-economic development models. The FirstRand Empowerment Foundation brings complementary strengths to this vision through long-term philanthropic investment and a dedication to systemic social transformation.

Recognising that South Africa’s development challenges require deep institutional collaboration rather than fragmented funding interventions, the two foundations have established an umbrella framework. This platform enables the co-design and co-funding of high-impact initiatives across critical developmental areas, including agriculture, climate resilience, education, civil society support, and impact investing.

Catalysing the Communal Red Meat Economy

The flagship initiative launched under this collaboration is the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) project, an intervention focused on communal livestock farmers across South Africa.

Communal farmers hold a significant portion of the country’s national herd, representing billions of rands in rural asset wealth. However, systemic hurdles—including fragmented infrastructure, limited veterinary support, lack of rangeland management systems, and barriers to formal commercial markets—have historically confined many communal producers to subsistence survival.

The RMIS programme is designed to bridge this divide. Over a three-year implementation cycle, the initiative will work directly with 1,000 communal farmers across 20 rural communities in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, and North West provinces.

Backed by a planned three-year funding commitment from Both FREF and Kagiso Trust, the project implements an end-to-end support model that includes:

• Comprehensive Training and Capacity Building: Equipping farmers with practical skills in animal health, herd management, rotational grazing, and commercial farm business administration.
• Climate-Smart Rangeland Management: Working with community structures to implement resource mapping and sustainable grazing practices that protect soil health and build climate resilience.
• Herd Genetics and Veterinary Health: Enhancing herd quality, weaning weights, and biosecurity standards to meet commercial market benchmarks.
• Direct Market Linkages and Mobile Infrastructure: Introducing mobile processing units and structured off-take avenues so farmers can trade transparently and earn fair market value for their livestock, bypassing exploitative intermediary chains.
• Youth Internships and Skills Transfer: Embedding young agricultural graduates within the communities to provide technical field support while gaining hands-on commercial experience.

Governance Rooted in Shared Accountability

Lasting development requires disciplined execution and transparent governance. Under the Strategic Collaboration Agreement, a joint Strategic Committee comprising leadership from both Kagiso Trust and FREF provides ongoing strategic direction, budget oversight, and progress monitoring.

Crucially, the programme is grounded in community agency. Rather than imposing top-down solutions, project teams work closely with traditional authorities, local leadership, and farmer associations from day one, ensuring that local ownership remains the foundation of long-term sustainability.

The signing of this agreement signals the beginning of a worthwhile journey. The RMIS project serves as the initial anchor, the collaboration between Kagiso Trust and the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation establishes a dynamic vehicle for future interventions that address structural inequality across South Africa.
