Empowering South Africa’s Youth with Vocational Skills for Economic Growth
As South Africa grapples with high unemployment, the need for a workforce skilled in practical trades has never been more urgent. The National Schools Skills Competition held in partnership with Sasol is set to take place from 26-27 September 2024 at the Advanced Training Institute (ATI), is a key initiative aimed at nurturing the vocational talents our country needs. By encouraging young people to pursue careers in skilled trades, the competition plays a vital role in boosting employment and supporting economic growth.
Over the past seven years, this competition has reached more than 10,000 learners and teachers nationwide, providing hands-on experience in trades like welding, electrical work, automotive services, and construction. By focusing on these essential areas, we are addressing South Africa’s critical skills gap and preparing learners to meet the demands of today’s job market.
With a national goal of producing 30,000 artisans annually by 2030, this competition is central to achieving that ambition. Learners gain not only technical expertise but also the confidence and opportunities to contribute to their communities and thrive in the world of work.

Our work, in partnership with the Department of Education and other key stakeholders, ensures that more young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, are equipped to enter high-demand fields. By promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), we’re helping to break down barriers to employment and creating a more inclusive and sustainable economy for all.
This year, we’re thrilled to welcome new partners, including Modena, ATI, and ADI, whose support strengthens the competition’s ability to deliver top-tier training and development opportunities. Their involvement highlights the critical role of vocational education in shaping South Africa’s future workforce.
Awards Ceremony
The competition will culminate in an awards ceremony on 27 September 2024 at the Focus Rooms, where the achievements of the learners and educators who have demonstrated exceptional skills over the two days will be celebrated. The National Schools Skills Competition is more than just a contest—it is an investment in our country’s youth and future. By fostering technical skills and promoting vocational careers, we are building a skilled, empowered workforce ready to drive South Africa’s economic growth.
